For Cecilia’s Design Focus she collaborated with Suzanne and Buck Bonham of Inventia Design, who created a beautiful large mirror. Suzanne shared her creative process with us:
“We love the look of old mirrors, so that is always our inspiration and goal. The glass is carefully distressed with a chemical formula that gives it the random tarnished look of a genuine antique. For the frame, I love the look of distressed paint, so I rely heavily on milk paints—they give me the sheen, workability / crack ability, which I like for a finish that looks ‘antique’.
Each of these finishes is a multi-layered affair and can be done in radically contrasting colors. In this case, Cecilia brought over fabrics and a sample of the wall color and picked some nice creamy grays out of my paint box. I always mix up my own paint colors. Cecilia didn’t want a lot of contrast or even any red under the gold gilt, but rather a soft palette of similar grays. I put multiple layers on, to simulate the look of gessoed wood which had some thick chunks gone from the surface. I then distressed the entire surface in order to properly age it and make it look old. A thin coat of shellac on the gilding protects the surface and then I hand rubbed the surface with paste wax for a rich overall ‘century old’ patina.”
